The Blue Bishops look like they are ready for the regular season.

The Asbury Park team had a chance to bond and train together at Camp Arthur Reider in Schwenksville, PA during the week of August 20.

Its always a great experience, Head Coach Joe Stinson said. You get up at 5:30 in the morning, were on the field at 6 oclock. We practice three times a day. They hate it – and then they love it.

Its a lasting memory for them, he said. The bonding, the maturity, the team factor thats involved in it. For us its the right thing.

In the teams last scrimmage of the pre-season against Middlesex High School at home last Friday, senior running back Jaashawn Jones ran for three touchdowns in a 28-7 win.

Jones got the Bishops going with a short touchdown run, as Asbury Park led at halftime 7-0.

However, he was just getting warmed up. In the second half Jones scored again, as he barreled in from about five yards yards out to give his team a two touchdown lead.

Later, Jones broke free and out-sprinted the defense for a 52-yard scamper to pay-dirt.

Open field, aint nobody catch me, Jones said.

Jones said the young offensive line has done a good job in front of him, as they were solid from the get-go.

Last scrimmage [against New Egypt and Dunellen High Schools] they was rusty a little bit, he said. They didnt start getting good until the end of the game. But now, they started from the rip.

Head Coach Joe Stinson said Jones running ability is one of the reasons the team switched from a wide-open, passing oriented offense to one more centered on the ground attack.

Hes one of the reasons we went to this offense, he said, because for years weve been the throw the ball on every down, wide open offense.

You cant expect a freshman quarterback [Will Johnson] to do that, so youre not going to put a square peg in a round hole, Stinson said. But above all, that kids [Jones] got to carry the ball. Hes our primary returning player, our most quality asset.

While the defense made some mistakes, Stinson said the players enthusiasm on the field made up for it.
