Asbury Park kicks off to Middlesex during their scrimmage last Friday at Asbury Park High School. The Blue Bishops open the regular season at home against Point Pleasant Borough this Saturday at noon.

Were young, we made some mistakes in terms of alignments and assignments, he said, but what we have is a lot of enthusiasm and aggressiveness.

He said his team is achieving their objective of improving each day.

We got better than we were last week, that was our objective, Stinson said. Were really young. Weve got three sophomores on the offensive line, three sophomores in the secondary, and a freshman quarterback.

Our objective has got to be day-by-day and then week-by-week, he said. We achieved that goal this week. Next week the stakes get raised a little bit.

Assistant coach Larry Hill agreed, as he said the team did well, but still can make more improvements.

We made some great gains today, he said. Still got a lot of learning to do, lot of work to do; but much improved from last week.

Stinson said the teams opening game against Point Pleasant Borough will be a challenge for his young squad.

Theyre the defending league champion. They played for the South Jersey Group II state finals last year, he said.

Asbury Park has an accomplished football program itself, and coach Stinson hopes this will help his team to mature quickly.

Weve been in the playoffs three years in a row, he said, be it were not as accomplished as weve been over the last couple of years in terms of name recognition of players.

Hopefully, the fact that weve been to the tournament the last three years and built up a little tradition, program wise, will help these kids mature at a faster rate than if they were participating in a team that hadnt won or been to the playoffs.

Its a big game for us, Stinson said about the upcoming contest against Point Borough. Theyre a school with a lot more kids. Well be ready to play. They got a lot of kids, theyre well coached.

Stinson said he became impressed with Point Borough Coach Calvin Thompson when the two coached together during the North-South All-Star Game.

Im impressed by him in a lot of ways, Stinson said. Weve become a little bit of friendly rivals here.

Jones said he expects the team to do well in their first game, as he said it could be pay-back for Point Boroughs defeat of Asbury Park when the two teams met last year.

The Blue Bishops game against Point Borough is at home on September 10 at noon, with their second game coming on the road against Point Pleasant Beach on September 23 at 7 pm.
