Athlete of the Week: Chris Pozo

In the United States, the youngest of the three brothers has made a name for himself as a soccer player.

Last season, Pozo helped the team catch lightning in a bottle as they reached the state sectional championship game and barely missed reaching the state finals.

Hes a quiet leader, head coach Bob Hogan said. Hogan said Pozo leads by example as he has a great attitude and work ethic.

The young Scarlet Fliers squad looks up to his example, Hogan said about Pozo, the teams co-captain along with fellow senior Wade Krezonis.

Despite the growing pains the team has experienced this year, Pozo has continued to shine on the field, as he has tallied 11 goals and five assists this season.

The senior star, who has scored two goals in a game twice this season, against Middletown South and Asbury Park, said netting a goal gives him a great feeling.

Its like the best thing, he said. You feel good.

The Scarlet Fliers will play their last game of the season at home against St. Rose on Thursday.

Hogan said the senior forward will get to represent Neptune in the Shore Conference senior all-star game at the end of November.

Pozo, who has visited Ecuador a few times since moving to the U.S., said he is considering moving back to his home country, where most of his family still lives.

He said he would like to pursue his dream of playing soccer professionally in Ecuador, while attending college there.

However, Pozo has no definite plans as of yet, as he said could go to an American university if he receives a soccer scholarship.

His favorite subject in school is science, as he said his favorite class is global science.

Although Pozo said that since coming to the United States he learned more and more English every day, he still finds himself immersed in Spanish.

He said he speaks Spanish to players on the Longbranch soccer team when the two teams play one another.

Pozo speaks Spanish at home with his family and also listens to Spanish music.

In his free time, Pozo enjoys watching soccer on television, hanging out with friends, and playing the drums.

His favorite soccer player is world renowned Brazilian star Ronaldo.

Every time he gets the ball he scores, he Pozo said about Ronaldo.

Perhaps one day people will say the same thing about an Ecuadorian player who brought his skills and leadership to Neptune High School.
