Ocean Kicks Howell Out of Quarterfinals

By WALTER J. ONEILL JR.

The Shore Conference playoffs of the boys soccer tournament had the Spartans of Ocean hosting the Rebels of Howell, Saturday morning. Ocean entered the tournament as the second seeded team in the Shore Conference.

Ocean had a bye round one and faced the Rebels in round two. The only problems that Howell gave the Spartans came from the spectator area. One of the officials had to stop the game and requested that Ocean Township staff remove a Howell spectator. The unruly spectator was upset with two calls the official made against a Rebel player. The man had threatened the official saying he would see him after the game, and it was in an unfriendly tone.

Howell actually scored first, when Kyle Bethel scored 15 minutes into the game. The Spartans, under the leadership of head coach Tom Reily, regrouped and attacked the Rebels.

Using some fancy footwork, Ocean Township gets past a Howell defender and scores a goal in the 3-2 win over the Rebels.

Ten minutes after Howell lit up the scoreboard, Ocean had tied the game when Diego Huerta scored an unassisted goal. Huerta had rushed the goal and headed the ball over the Howell goalie and then kicked it into the goal from two yards out.

The second goal of the game for Ocean was scored when Juan Arana took a corner kick which Jimmy Surmonte put in the net at just seven minutes after Oceans first goal.
