Over the Rainbow: ‘Company’ Explores Love and Marriage
By ROBERT F. CARROLL
Over the Rainbow Productions is presenting Company, the Broadway musical of a few seasons back that features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim—and a look at the varieties of love and marriage.
The play, at the Eatontown Playhouse, is a series of musical vignettes acted out by various couples, mostly married or on the verge, introduced by master of ceremonies Robert (Eric Garcia), himself a 35-year-old bachelor.
Roberts not avoiding marriage, he confesses, even while singing Im Not Getting Married. But, he sadly admits, Marriage is avoiding me.
The married couples are mostly happily wed. Wife Sarah (Antje Weymann), for example, is a cheerful drinker while hubby Harry (Greg Hartman) has climbed on the wagon. Another couple, Susan (Emma Woodhouse) and Peter (Jeff Salle), are planning a largely friendly divorce.
Jenny (Dorothy Creamer) is hilariously high on grass and David (Adam Hayek) is her very understanding husband. The exuberant Marta (Amanda Winter) sings of New York in City of Strangers and Joanne (Jessica Kaley) serenades The Ladies Who Lunch, those women who apparently substitute lunch for a more substantial relationship.
Amy (Rachel Hayek) confides Im Not Getting Married but suggests Dont tell Paul (Joseph Nuccio).
Robert eventually climbs into bed with April (Renee Rice), but its a temporary thing, and he eventually ends up alone, and not necessarily unhappy.
This entertaining Company has final performances this weekend—Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. The Eatontown Playhouse is on Route 35 just north of the Eatontown circle.
