Sailing Program A Success in Neptune City

By PEGGY SKUDERA

The Friends of Belmar Harbor, an organization that sponsors a youth regatta each summer, made a presentation at Neptune City’s borough council meeting on Monday.

Michael Mixson who grew up in the borough and is a member of the organization said he was pleased that Neptune City was able to offer eight borough students the chance to become a part of the sailing program this past summer.

“I moved to Neptune City when I was five years old,” explained Mixson. “I lived right across the street from the Shark River and began my love for sailing by the time I was 10 years old. Being a part of The Friends of Belmar Harbor and offering a chance for other children to learn to sail gives me great pleasure to give back to my childhood community.”

The sailing program is a joint effort by Wall Township, Neptune Township, Avon, Belmar and Neptune City. Each summer, children as young as eight years old can apply for the chance to learn how to sail on the Shark River in their community. James Gallaher, 12, of the borough said he liked the chance to learn how to sail on his own.

“I loved sailing the river,” said James. “It was a blast and we all had a lot of fun.”

Community Center director Tom Adcock asked the council to consider the same program for next year.

“These children here tonight represent the first group from Neptune City who participated in the program and we can see how much they learned and the enthusiasm they all have,” said Adcock. “We really should offer this program again.”

In other business, Mayor Tom Arnone said that the redevelopment project for the eastside of town is on-going and that the master plan should be finalized soon.

“We will be having the master plan meeting on December 19 and hopefully we can progress quickly with the project,” said the mayor. “Everyone involved has worked very hard on this plan so we can continue to improve and beautify the town we live in.”

The borough’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony will be held on Friday, Dec. 9 beginning at 6pm at the Community Center on Third Avenue.
