In Ocean: 2 Men Charged With Car Thefts

Two men were arrested in Ocean Township last week and charged in connection with a series of motor vehicle thefts in the township.

Police said Michael C. Garibay, 24, of Eatontown and Joseph A. Wilson, 18, of Long Branch were arrested Dec. 19.

Police said a woman who lives in Continental Gardens Apartments reported the theft of her car Dec. 19 at approximately 6:10 a.m. after she left it running while she went back to her apartment.

While in her apartment she saw it being driven away and then parked. She confronted the two men in her car and they got out and began to walk away.

The victim began yelling and the two men returned, pointed a gun at her and told her to be quiet.

The victim got back in her car and drove away.

As this incident was being investigated, several other reports of stolen cars came into the station. Three separate calls came in about vehicles being stolen.

The other two victims lived in nearby apartment complexes and reported they also left their cars running while they returned to their apartments. When they returned, their cars were missing.

One victim from the Twinbrook apartments observed two suspects in his vehicle and advised the police officers.

A short time later Police Officer Greg. Schenck located the two men and they were taken into custody without incident. No handgun was located.

All four stolen vehicles were recovered. Det. Greg Tongring responded to the scene and processed several of the vehicles for evidence.

Based on the on scene investigations suspects Garibay and Wilson were each charged with theft of a motor vehicle, conspiracy to commit theft and obstruction of law. Other charges are pending further investigation.

Bail was set at $75,000 for each of the suspects.
