In Bradley Beach: Police Moving To New Home
By JOANNE L. PAPAIANNI
The long awaited renovations to Bradley Beach borough hall, beginning with the police station, are underway.
On Monday the Department of Public Works began emptying the police department and moving furniture over to the fire house on Main Street, which the police will call home for at least the next 10 months.
At Tuesday’s Borough Council meeting Councilman Thomas Volante said that the dispatch equipment will be installed and ready today (Sept. 28).
He said the police substation will be located in the north east corner of the fire house and the intercom system will be in place for those entering the building.
Council also awarded a contract to Bako Construction, Totowa, in the amount of $39,800 for the removal of asbestos in the police department. According to Mayor Stephen Schueler the cost was $8,000 below prior estimates for the job.
He explained that parts of the building will be sealed off for two weeks, while the asbestos removal is taking place.
During his report Schueler said he had met with town officials regarding renovations to the beach bathrooms.
He said in an effort to alleviate the long lines that develop for the women’s bathrooms on the weekends, a new configuration of the existing building was designed to include an additional stall for the females.
The mayor said the group discussed allowing women to use the lifeguard bathrooms, only on the weekends, giving them two additional stalls.
“It was a good use of everybody sitting down and putting their heads together,” he said.
The mayor also said that parts of the boardwalk, which still include wooden boards will be replaced before next year’s beach season.
He said they are looking at using an improved version of the synthetic material, Trex. Schueler said older samples of Trex became slippery when wet, but newer versions do not.
Dave Berkowitz, of the Bradley Beach Chamber of Commerce, inquired about new changing booths for the beach front.
“You are always looking to move business from the beach to Main Street, it’s advantageous to provide changing rooms, he said.
In other chamber news, council agreed to allow the chamber to hang banners at the beach-front and at Riley Park, advertising the Chef’s Classic event they are holding Oct. 8.
The event is being held at Church of the Ascension in town from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Also at the meeting council authorized certificates of appreciation to the Lewis-Taylor family for cleaning up trash along the beachfront during their visit Sept. 18, following a wind and rain storm.
Mayor Schueler also appointed Pat D’Angelo as an alternate to the zoning Board of Adjustment due to the resignation of one of the members.
