The Asbury Park Fire Department responded to a fire at an unoccupied three story house at 405 Sewall Ave. at 2:30 a.m. Dec. 18.
At the time of their arrival, firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the structure. Upon entering the home, firefighters encountered heavy fire on the second and third floors.
One firefighter received second degree burns to his forehead, another firefighter had a sprained knee and a third had a sprained ankle.
The fire was declared under control approximately an hour and a half after firefighters first responded.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated by Asbury Park Fire Dept., the Monmouth County Fire Marshalls Office, and the Asbury Park Police Department.
At this time the fire is being considered an accident, said Fire Inspector Garrett Giberson. An electronic problem has not been ruled out as its cause, he said. Power to the home was still in service prior to the fire but was cut off by Jersey Central Power and Light when fire officials contacted them.
Mutual aid was given by the Neptune Fire Department and the Oakhurst Fire Department, with the Wanamassa and Deal Fire Departments covering for the city along with the Allenhurst and Neptune First Aid Squads.
