Allenhurst Woman Killed By Train
By JOANNE L. PAPAIANNI
An Allenhurst woman was killed Monday evening by an oncoming train after stepping onto the railroad tracks as the train approached the Allenhurst station.
According to NJ Transit spokesperson, Joe Dee, Ruth Gorman, 54, of Paige Avenue was visible to the engineer of train #4378 who blasted the horn and began applying the breaks when he saw her near the tracks.
“She stepped onto the track,” Dee said.
He said the official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner and would not speculate on the possibility of it being a suicide.
“We don’t speculate about that,” he said.
The incident occurred at 7:50 p.m. on Monday evening on the North Jersey Coast Line.
Gorman was labeled a trespasser by NJ Transit, a designation given to anyone who is on or near the tracks anywhere other than a crossing.
“It did not occur at a crossing, it was on the track at a location where no one should be,” said Dee.
None of the train’s 90 passengers or crew members were injured by the train’s sudden stop.

I am deeply saddend to read this terrible news. Ruth was a dear friend of mine in high school and we reconnected for a few years back in New York City in the mid 80’s. She was so very kind and a loving friend always. I remember when she first arrived at 91st as a freshman. We all loved her. I know that she went through some very difficult times during our high school years and then later as well. She was a shining star with sparkling green eyes and a heart so genuine. I hope she is at peace. Angela Scott
