The Steinbach building in Asbury Park, which closed in July 1979, is being converted to residential and commercial units. Lofts are available for rent and Old Man Raffertys, a restaurant, is scheduled to open in July on the first floor.

The landmark Steinbach building on Cookman Avenue in Asbury Park is set to be inaugurated tonight (April 26) with a celebration and ceremony featuring three special guests from the store’s glory days, along with city officials and the building’s owner.

The ceremony will be from 6 to 10 p.m. with a tour of the building for the press and media followed by a cocktail reception, dancing and musical entertainment.

Carter Sackman, president of Sackman Enterprises, along with city officials are scheduled to attend.

The Steinbach building has been restored as an historic structure for modern living. The 100,000 square foot building will house 63 lofts and apartments with retail establishments on the first floor.

Old Man Rafferty’s, a New Brunswick based restaurant, will open a 9,000-square-foot eatery on the first floor facing Cookman Avenue.

The building’s 100-year-old facade was restored to the look it sported in the mid 1950’s, allowing Sackman to apply for state and federal tax credits for historical preservation and conservation.
