An Allenhurst woman was killed Monday evening by an oncoming train after stepping onto the railroad tracks as the train approached the Allenhurst station.

According to NJ Transit spokesperson, Joe Dee, Ruth Gorman, 54, of Paige Avenue was visible to the engineer of train #4378 who blasted the horn and began applying the breaks when he saw her near the tracks.

“She stepped onto the track,” Dee said.

He said the official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner and would not speculate on the possibility of it being a suicide.
