Asbury Park to Host Newark Film Festival at Baronet

Revolution 67 will play at the Baronet Theatre in Asbury Park June 29 as part of the Newark Black Film Festival.

The Newark Black Film Festival, produced by the Newark Museum in conjunction with the Monmouth County Arts Council, has added Asbury Park to its venues.


The festival is expanding its 33-year-old program by including Asbury Park as an additional venue this summer. The series will take place at the Baronet Theatre, 205 Fourth Ave. and will be free.

The Film Festival, which has attracted thousands over the past 33 years, incorporates the best in films about or made by African-Americans and brings well-known speakers and filmmakers to our community.

Playing on June 29 at 7 p.m. is Revolution 67. The film depicts the untold story of the riots that erupted in Newark, New Jersey in 1967. A discussion afterward will be hosted by Tyrone Laws and moderated by Dr. Clement A. Price, Director of the Institute of Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience.

Playing on July 13 at 7 p.m. is Chisolm 72: Unbought and Unbossed, which follows the campaign of Shirley Chisolm, the first female black woman to run for president. The film will be hosted by Lorraine Stone.

Playing on July 20 at 7 p.m. is James Brown – The Man the Music and the Message. This film highlights the live performances of Brown and his music that spanned four decades, from dancing for pennies to entertaining presidents. It will be hosted by Dorian Parreott.

Playing on July 27 at 7 p.m. is the Oscar award winning film Tsotsi, a gritty and moving portrait of an angry young man living in a state of extreme urban deprivation.

There are childrens film screenings on these same dates at 10 a.m. Youth screening programs with film-related hands-on workshops will be presented.

Asbury Park Farmers Market Opens June 30

If its summer, it must be time for the Asbury Park Farmers Market.

The Asbury Park Urban Enterprise Zone Program is once again hosting the popular Asbury Park Farmers Market, which will open Sat., June 30.

The market features Jersey Fresh produce and other assorted foods and is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The market is located in Firemans Park, right on Main Street and directly across the street from Sunset Park.

Malcolm Navias, Chairman of the APUEZ, commented that the opening of the Farmers Market on Main Street is another reason to celebrate the start of summer.
