Vincent G. Buttiglieri, the current municipal clerk of South Plainfield, was sworn in last Friday as the new Township Clerk of Ocean Township, winning the job from a field of about 70 applicants.

He replaces outgoing clerk Deborah J. Smith, who is retiring at the end of the month after working in the township for 32 years.

I am very excited to be here. Debbie has laid a lot of the ground work and I hope to step in and continue her good work here. I am looking forward to it, Buttiglieri, 43, said.

This seems to be a community that is very involved and is everything a township should be, he said.

Buttiglieri, whose salary is $92,000 a year, will begin his new job on March 10. He and his wife, RayJean, now live in South Plainfield but are thinking about moving to this area.

He is a graduate of Seton Hall University and has worked in South Plainfield for the last seven years.

We are very excited about Vincent joining our staff and we are looking forward to him beginning here, said Mayor William F. Larkin.

Smith was also recognized for her years of service with a special resolution at the last Township Committee meeting, which was her last. Larkin handed Smith the gavel at the end of the meeting and let her officially hammer it to an end.

We are sorry to see Debbie go after years of service. She will be missed, Larkin said.

Other council members and residents also praised Smiths service to the township.

Debbie was the great keel that kept the ship in a nice direction, said resident Sydney Lekach.

She was the gateway to the township for the public. She has done a tremendous job for the public in providing the flow of information, said resident Larry Loigman.

Smith became tearful when presented the resolution, saying the township has always been home for me.

I have enjoyed Ocean Township and it is definitely going to be missed, she said.

Its hard to let go of it but I have enjoyed every aspect of it, said Smith, who plans to move to Pennsylvania with her husband.
