City Residents Urged to Attend Main Street Redevelopment Meet

Asbury Park is holding a public meeting April 3 at 7 p.m. to present revisions to the draft of the Main Street Redevelopment Plan along with revitalization strategies.

The meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers.

The public is urged to attend and express their opinions.

On Feb. 7 Urban Partners presented its recommendations at a public meeting.

They have since made revisions based on public input from the meeting and have prepared a series of shorter-term Main Street revitalization strategies that will be presented at the April 3 meeting.

The meeting will consist of a formal presentation of the revised plan followed by a question and answer session with the public.

Citizens are invited to submit written recommendations as well.

The Main Street corridor was approved as a redevelopment area by the Mayor and Council in 2004.

The area was designated as the entire length of Main Street from Allenhurst on the north end to Neptune Township on the south end.

Urban Partners of Philadelphia was hired to undertake the Main Street Redevelopment Plan, and determine specific projects and strategies in the area.

The city established initial goals for the area including making Main Street more pedestrian friendly to promote interaction between both sides of the street; encourage uses that attract pedestrian activity and implement physical improvements to the street and sidewalks; improve access and usability of the Transportation Center and City Hall; improve parking; create design guidelines; draft zoning and traffic measures to improve safety.

Urban Partners will then incorporate all additional comments from the public into the final Redevelopment Plan to be presented to the city council.
