Ocean Offering Free Golf Game To Residents at Course Opening
By DON STINE
The public, and particularly Ocean Township residents, are invited to celebrate the grand opening of the refurbished Colonial Terrace Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18.
We are very excited about the golf course reopening. We have spent the fall and winter months preparing it and the club house for the grand opening and I hope residents take advantage of it and turn out to play, said Mayor William F. Larkin.
The official opening festival for the 9-hole golf course, on Wickapecko Drive, will be Saturday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. There will be youth golf activities and demonstrations, face-painting, games, balloons and free hot dogs and refreshments.
The official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m.
Then, from noon to dusk on both Saturday and Sunday, Ocean Township residents are invited to come play a game of golf- for free. To take advantage of the free golf outing you must make advance reservations beginning May 5 by telephoning 732-531-2600.
We are going to try and reserve as many tee times for township residents as we can at this point, Larkin said.
On Thursday, May 15 there will be an inaugural cocktail party from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the English Manor, at Logan Road and English Lane. Food, an open wine and beer bar, entertainment, and a putting contest will all be available.
And, as an added treat, people attending the party will be able to walk out the back of the English Manor, which borders the golf course, and take a free golf cart ride around the course and see the improvements. We are using the cocktail party as a fund-raiser to support youth programs at the golf course, Larkin said.
Tickets are $50 each and can also be purchased by calling 732-531-2600
The course is slated to be open yearly from April through November from about 7 a.m. until dusk and will employ about 12 part-time workers.
Golf fees will be $17 for residents and $22 for nonresidents and either 9 or 18 holes of golf can be played for the same price. Golf carts are $26 with a minimum of two people.
Golf course fees will be subsidized for young people learning to play golf and will be as little as $4 or $5.
The 54-acre golf course was founded in 1925 is one of the only remaining nine-hole golf courses in the state.
The township last year purchased 19.5 acres of the tract using mostly grant money. The remaining portion of the golf course was already owned by the township since the 1930s when it was acquired for back taxes.
