By DON STINE

The Shark River Hills Property Owners Association of Neptune is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year. It is the oldest such organization in the township.

The association serves the residents of Shark River Hills and Neptune and we are actively involved in the community. It has been a real honor to serve as its leader for the past 20 years, said association President JoAnne Collins.

I hope we have served our residents well over the years. We have kept our membership informed and abreast of whats happening in Neptune and created a sense of camaraderie in the neighborhood over the years, she said.

If you live in the hills come join up and meet your neighbors, Collins said.

To join the SRHPOA telephone Collins at 732-774-2695 or send $10 for a yearly membership to SRHPOA, P.O. Box 68, Neptune, NJ 07754

Founded in 1923 and incorporated in 1932, the association is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization striving to better community life in the townships Shark River section.

The association represents about 265 families and issues a monthly newsletter keeping its membership up to date on important issues.

We hold food drives, hold open forums for our members on important issues that affect our residents, Collins said.

In addition to holding many informational forums on a variety of issues during the year, the association also maintains the Memorial Park on South Riverside Drive by planting flowers and shrubs and providing the flags for the flag pole.

The society also contributes time and money to many charitable and social events.

In 1997 the association erected three welcoming signs at entrances to the Shark River area. The association was also instrumental in getting three ordinances passed: establishing a slow speed, no wake in the river and prohibiting the launching of boats and personal watercraft in environmentally sensitive areas, restricting parking on certain roadways, and having the township acquire the old Tides Motel site.

We are now very concerned about dredging the Shark River inlet since that is located right in our back yards and I hope that can be accomplished shortly, Collins said.

At 7 p.m. on Tues., April 22, Mayor Randy Bishop will present a special proclamation to the association at the Shark River Hills Fire House on Brighton Avenue. Refreshments will follow.

Immediately after the presentation the association will hold its annual open forum for residents to voice their concerns and raise issues to the governing body.

I am very proud of the SRHPOA for their 85 years of advocacy for residents and all of Neptune. It is organizations such as this that help to make Neptune a great place to live and help make the job of government much more transparent, Bishop said.
