Visitors to Asbury Park 100 years ago enjoyed the cool sea breezes and told their friends they hated to leave.
These are just some of the sentiments expressed on vintage postcards sent from Asbury Park in the early 1900s.

Postcards are a big part of the Jersey Shore culture and Asbury Park is an intrinsic piece of that culture, says Greg Demaras, a broker manager at the John C. Conover Agency in Asbury Park who is spearheading Postcard Stories, a new art installation on display now throughout the citys downtown.

The Asbury Park amusement names are legendary: Zimel Resnick and the Palace on Wesley Lake; Abe Ruben and his electric bingo known as Fascination in the Third Avenue Pavilion; Madame Marie and her fortune-telling booth at the head of Fourth Avenue.
She lived in a rooming house on Lake Avenue, Lloyd McBride said, before the bumper cars were put in. She moved her booth to the Boardwalk after the Hurricane of 44.
McBride would know. Hes lived here nearly all his life and started working on the Boardwalk in 1949, two years after graduating from Asbury Park High School. His boss? Bob Fountain, who operated Bubbleland, the popular kiddie rides at the head of Third.

Half way round the world tonight
In a strange and foreign land
A soldier packs his memories
As he leaves Afghanistan
It was the one occasion that always made me feel like a phony or, worse, like a politician.
It was the annual Asbury Park Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Park, and invariably we council members would be invited to speak on a day that should have belonged to city veterans.
My dad was a World War II quartermaster, of course, and as a teenager in the 1960s, Id seen too many kids return from Vietnam physically injured and mentally scarred or not return at all.

The B Plot Star in Barbara’s Universe

Richard VirgilioBy RICHARD VIRGILIO
For the past two weeks the media has been consumed with gay icon Barbara Walters new autobiography, Audition especially the revelation that she had an affair with a married man 30 years ago. Me? I could not care any less about who she slept with. Thats between the two of them.
What makes me crazy is that Barbara, in her book, skewers her former colleague on The View, Star Jones, for not telling the world her weight loss was due to stomach stapling, not Pilates and portion control, as Star originally said.

The swearing in will take place in July.
Schreck garnered 425 votes to Councilman Gary Engelstads 395 and former Councilman Benjamin Waters 71.

Speaking of her new position Schreck said she is absolutely ready to take the helm.
But its not really about me, she said at her victory party. Were putting together a transition team. Were going to do everything right.
