New Shops Now Open On City Boardwalk

Two sets of stairs now connect the Fifth Avenue Beach in Asbury Park to the promenade along Convention Hall.The city of Asbury Park is issuing temporary certificates of occupancy to businesses on the boardwalk, even as they continue to negotiate with developers Madison Marquette.
The certificates will be good until Sept. 15.
City Manager Terrence Reidy said the decision was made to issue the temporary certificates, with a time frame, because a subsequent developers agreement between both parties has not been reached although talks began in March.
We recently had a couple of sessions, Reidy said and added that the city did not want to delay businesses from opening.

Interlaken Hires First Female Police Chief in County

Interlaken is scheduled to swear in the countys first female police chief July 2.
A months-long search that included reviewing 75 applicants ended this month when Borough Council selected Karen Sullivan, a captain of the Chatham Police Department, to serve as police chief in this residential-only borough.
The Monmouth County Prosecutors Office has been in charge of the department after irregularities were found there two years ago. Following an investigation one police officer was charged and fired. Sullivans hiring is expected to end the investigation and allow the borough to rebuild the force.

Court to Hear Homeless Shelter Appeal July 9

The Jersey Shore Rescue Mission in Asbury Park has filed an appeal with the Monmouth County Superior Court of the citys denial of variances to allow the homeless shelter to remain open.
The appeal will be heard by Judge Lawrence Lawson July 9.
The mission was closed in October when the Zoning Board of Adjustment denied variances to the mission.

Neptune Meetings To Stay at Senior Center

The Neptune Township Committee meetings will continue to be held at the townships senior citizen center until further notice instead of the Summerfield School as previously announced.
Mayor Randy Bishop said delays on renovations and expansion to the senior center, at Neptune Boulevard and Route 33, have been postponed because of high bids on the project.
The Township Committee meetings will remain at the senior center until further notice, he said.
The committee has been holding its meetings at the center since the municipal meeting room in Town Hall is also under renovation.
Bishop said bids received for improvements to the senior citizens center seemed too high, which raised some concerns.

Neptune City Promotes 2 Cops

Retiring Neptune City School Superintendent Robert Shafer is commended for his 40 years of service to the Neptune City school district.By JOANNE L. PAPAIANNI
Two members of the Neptune City Police Department were promoted this week at the Borough Council meeting.
Louis Trocchio was promoted from sergeant to lieutenant and James Isacson was promoted from police officer to sergeant.
Council also issued proclamations to School Superintendent Robert Shafer, who is retiring from the Neptune City School district after 40 years, and Bill Ryan who retired as president from the Neptune City/Bradley Beach Little League.

Ocean Police Officer Graduates From FBI National Academy

Ocean Township Det. Lt. Steven R. Peters recently graduated from the FBI National Academy.Ocean Township Det. Lt. Steven R. Peters successfully graduated the 233rd session of the FBI National Academy on June 6 at Quantico, Virginia.
The session of the National Academy consisted of law enforcement men and women from 48 states, the District of Columbia and Guam, 29 international countries, four military organizations, and two federal civilian organizations.

2 Tinton Falls Police Dogs Receive Bullet-Proof Vests

Two of Tinton Falls unsung heroes got a leg up, thanks to school children and others who donated to purchase bullet-proof vests for the boroughs K-9 unit.
The Vested Interest Fund run by the Associated Humane Societies donated two bullet-proof vests to the Police Departments K-9 Unit to give them as much protection as their human handlers. The vests are valued at $895 each. There are three dogs in the canine unit and one already has a vest.
Theyve earned it, Chief Gerald Turning said.

Neptune Police Present Courage Award for Help in Burglar Arrest

James DeckerJames Decker was presented the Award of Courage by the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police at Mondays Neptune Township Committee meeting for his role in apprehending a burglar in Ocean Grove on May 22.
Decker, who is an employee with Ocean Grove-based Gannon Construction, observed a male who was acting suspiciously and notified his main office to call the police.
Decker then provided police with an accurate description of the man.
It was then discovered that the suspect had just committed a burglary and based on (Deckers) information we were able to identify and arrest the burglar, said Police Chief Howard ONeil, who is chairman of the state lodges Awards Committee.
