It appears two Bradley Beach professionals will no longer hold their positions after Julie Schreck is sworn in as mayor July 1.
At Tuesday nights council meeting Schreck said she will be appointing a new borough attorney to replace Michael DuPont and a new engineer to replace Philip Kavanaugh.
Both men began in their positions July 1, 2003.
Those are two positions Ive identified as ones Id like to replace, Schreck said.
Schreck placed an item on the agenda mandating that Requests For Qualifications, or RFQs be placed on the borough Web site.
The measure was approved, but only after Mayor Stephen Schueler asked Schreck if she had already interviewed an attorney and engineer for the positions.
There is a certain email that has gone around, Schueler said.
Schreck said she wanted the RFQs posted for informational purposes only so council members can peruse the qualifications of those she nominates for borough positions.
In other business, construction official Donald Clare reported that the new FEMA flood maps that will become effective January 1, include minimal changes for residents.
Clare said information will be posted on the boroughs Web site with links to other sites including FEMA, where they can download maps of Bradley Beach.
He said residents can type in their address and see if they are in a flood zone.
But he warned that the FEMA maps load very slowly and told people not to become discouraged.
Go get a cup of coffee, he said.
Clare also recommending applying for flood insurance now due to the possibility of rate hikes when the new maps are issued.
Clare also commended Schueler who will be leaving office July 1.
Its been a pleasure working with you, and the construction department asked me to convey that to you as well, Clare said.
Fletcher Lake Commission member Alan Quixley suggested the flood areas should be looked at again because of the new storm scepters and outfall pipe installed in the lake in the past year.
Several residents questioned whether or not they would need flood insurance, with or without a mortgage.
Kavanaugh explained that the new map outlines a small portion of the borough which is in the 100 year flood zone, meaning there is a 1 percent chance that a flood will hit the area in a 100 year period.
People living in that area would most likely need flood insurance.
Another section outlines a 500 year flood zone.
Borough Administrator Phyllis Quixley reported that beach badge prices are higher than last years at this time.
We already have 33 percent of our anticipated revenue and the beach isnt even open yet, she said.
Quixley said the unisex badges, which are being sold for the first time, have been a big success.
Councilman Gary Engelstad, who initiated the unisex badges, said a beach patron told him when suntan lotion got onto the new badges, the paint came off.
He asked Quixley to look into it and possibly contact the manufacturer.
The borough attorney cautioned council members about emailing each other.
He said several public officials have been involved in lawsuits demanding that their personal emails be made public.
DuPont suggested that elected officials maintain a separate email address for municipal business.
He also said any email by a public official could be subject to disclosure.
If the public cant read the email, dont put it in an email, he said.
