Ocean Township High School Principal Julia Davidows pride was obvious as she spoke of one of her seniors who was recently awarded a scholarship from Davidows own professional organization.

We dont always have one, she said of the award granted to Melanie Sidran who plans to attend the University of Maryland next year.

She explained that Ocean Township High School has not had a recipient of the prestigious award in five years.

There were only two in Monmouth County, Davidow said of this years winners.

Allentown was the other high school represented.

I nominate someone every year, she said.

The scholarship is awarded by a committee of four from the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association to 25 deserving seniors.

Considering each high school principal in the 600 New Jersey high schools selects one student, this is an exceptional accomplishment with fierce competition, Davidow said in her letter to superintendent of schools Thomas Pagano.

I nominated her (Sidran) because of her leadership role in the student council, and the Character Club and Key Club, Davidow said. I know Melanie, Ive worked with her over time.

Sidran was also inducted into the National Honor Society and was named a Spartan Scholar.

She is involved in the Girl Scouts, Rustic Pathways and volunteered for the Eden Woolley House 5K Run/Walk.

Davidow also said Sidran stood out because of her effectiveness as a leader.

Its not just academics, its leadership, she said. Its how much they get things done…move their school.
