Selling the current senior citizens center and purchasing another nearby building for an expanded center will be discussed at the Aug. 11 Neptune Township Committee meeting.

Repairs and renovations were proposed for the current senior center, at Neptune Boulevard and Route 33, but the bids for that project were rejected by the governing body Monday night because they all came in too high.

Township Committeewoman Mary Beth Jahn said the township is considering selling the current senior center and purchasing the old Rite Aid building on Route 33, two lots east of the current center. Money from the sale would offset the purchase price for the new center.

The new center will have more room, more parking, and is a better investment as the senior center, she said.

The Township Committee also introduced a $2.8 million bond ordinance Monday night that will help fund the new purchase and its renovation.

Money from the sale of the old senior center will also be used to offset costs.

While exact cost estimates for the sale of the old center were not given at the meeting, Deputy Mayor Michael Brantley said its a good number.

The new center is about double the size of the existing center, said Township Administrator Philip D. Huhn.
