By TOM SHORTELL
Asbury Park Volleyball will host its third annual Beach Open Sat., Aug. 2 and Sun, Aug. 3 on the Fifth Avenue beach.
Karen Jaroneski, event co-director, said they are expecting about 200 people to compete over the two days. Saturday will have four divisions of teams ranging in size from four to six players. Sunday will have the groups first twos tournament with three divisions. The tournament runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
The tournament attracts members of the GLBT community.
Were mostly gay, but were straight friendly, Jaronski said.
Asbury Park Volleyball began in 2005 when Asbury Park residents began playing unorganized volleyball games on the Sixth and Fifth avenue beaches. When winter came, the league moved indoors to Trinity Church, where the group was formed. Just because winter came, we didnt want to stop playing, Jaroneski said.
Registration for the tournaments closes today. The cost is $20 per player to play Saturday and $30 per player on Sunday.
Jaroneski will play in the twos tournament in the recreation division.
Im optimistic, she said of her chances. Im sure Im going to have fun.
