Asbury Park Mayor’s Ball To Benefit Recreation Programs

Mayor Kevin Sanders discusses plans for this yearBy JOANNE L. PAPAIANNI
This year’s Asbury Park Mayor’s Ball will have a beach type theme and once again Mayor Kevin Sanders believes it will be a well attended affair.

“Usually we have to turn people away,” he said.

Funds raised from the event will be used for the city recreation program and for three scholarships for Asbury Park High School graduates.

This year’s scholarship recipients are Kemar Gittens, Carletta Shields and Frankie Vanagas.

Each will receive a $2500 scholarship.

The ball, the sixth annual, is being held Sept. 13 at the Berkeley Hotel with the cocktail reception from 6 to 7 p.m. and dinner/dance to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Music is by Totally Soul.

Tickets for the event are $125 per person.

There will be three honored guests this year including Father Gerard Lynch, recent pastor of Our Lady Mount Carmel, who was tranferred earlier this year to a parish in south Jersey.

Also honored will be Sister Isis, who organizes the city’s Kwannzza celebration, and donates countless hours helping city youth.

“She loves the community and she loves the kids,” Sanders said.

Tyrone Asia, a long time resident who has moved to Virginia, but who has not forgotten his Asbury Park roots will also be honored.

“Even though he is successful, he has not forgotten his roots, he is always reaching out and helping with activities here,” Sanders said.

Two book awards in the amount of $500 will also be awarded.

Sanders said, “We just like to help with the foundations of Asbury Park, bringing options to kids. We want them to go to school, be productive citizens and hope they come back to Asbury Park when they are successful.”

The mayor said developers Madison Marquette will again provide the cocktail hour and the valet parking for the event.
