‘Light Up the Lake’ Boat Regatta Planned for Deal Lake Sept. 27

Deal Lake will be the scene of the inaugural Deal Lake Regatta, “Light up The Lake” on Sat., Sept. 27 which will feature illuminated boats in a loop around the western portion of the lake.

In addition, fund-raising house parties are being scheduled beginning at 5 p.m. at private homes on the lake to raise funds and awareness in support of the lake. Deal Lake has seen marked deterioration in the past several years.

Mark Fleming, Wanamassa, one of the organizers of the events said, “After attending several meetings hosted by the Friends of Deal Lake, we were inspired to create a fun way to help the lake and include as many people as possible from the surrounding communities.”

“In addition, we are encouraging all homeowners on the lake to illuminate their properties with white lights, candles, tiki torches, flood lights or in any other creative way.”

A boating course has been planned to loop the western area of the lake around Wanamassa Point and will include both power and non-power boats. Awards will be given in several categories and boats will be judged by those attending the house parties.

All local residents are invited to participate in the regatta, not just lakeside residents.

There are several launch sites around the lake for easy access. Registration for boats will be at the Lake House Restaurant in Allenhurst from noon until 1 p.m. on Sept. 27, the day of the event.

Registration for house parties can be done on-line at
deallakeevents@yahoo.com.

In addition to these events the regatta organizers are encouraging boaters to illuminate their varied watercrafts with lanterns or any kind of lights and cruise the lake after sunset at 7 p.m.

Funds raised through these efforts will be earmarked for the purchase of aerators that will help to increase the oxygen levels in the water and thereby adding to the improvement of the water quality.

Based on a report from the Deal Lake Commission, “the environmental state of Deal Lake is extremely poor. Pollutants exceed state mandated levels.”

Deal Lake borders on seven communities and includes 38 miles of shoreline. With a history dating back to the Lenape Indians, Deal Lake has always been a recreational spot for boaters, fisherman and the local community.

Co-organizer Eileen Chapman, Asbury Park, commented that “Based on reports that state western sections of the lake are in desperate need and many areas will be filled in within 10 years. The time is now to help make a difference, before it’s too late”.
