Neptune Township Discusses Licensing Cats

By DON STINE
Cats would have to have be licensed and controlled just like dogs under a proposal being discussed by the Neptune Township Committee.

The governing body discussed the proposal at last week’s workshop.

“A resident called township officials about it- that’s really all I know. They were particularly saying they would like a pooper-scooper law imposed on cats,” Mayor Randy Bishop said.

Bishop said he doesn’t know much more about the matter except that it was brought up for discussion at the meeting and that efforts will be made to contact the resident who called.

Township Attorney Gene Anthony said that cats would have to be licensed, just like dogs, if such a measure were enacted.

“Otherwise there is no way to trace it,” he said.

The dog ordinance would have to be amended to include cats or a separate ordinance regulating just cats would have to be adopted.

Bishop said he is not sure how the township would license the cats or how it would be enforced.

Township Clerk Richard J. Cuttrell said other municipalities have ordinances regulating cats.

“They have much the same language as a dog ordinance but they include cats,” he said.
