City School Budget Includes 62 Staff Cuts

By PAUL BOOTH
There weren’t enough chairs in the Bradley Elementary School auditorium Tuesday night to accommodate the community members and educators who showed up to assail a proposed Asbury Park Board of Education budget that calls for 62 staff cuts while raising the school tax rate the maximum amount.

The $78 million budget calls for 62 job cuts, including all of the district’s cafeteria workers (the work would be contracted out), more than 20 teachers, six parent liaisons and five technology coordinators, among others. All the while, the tax levy would be raised four percent, the maximum allowed by state law, to $6.1 million, and would result in an additional $44 per year on the average tax bill. The average bill is based on a home assessed at $80,000.
