Avon Approves Lower Fees for Marina Slips

The Avon Board of Commissioners has approved new rules and regulations for the municipal marina.

The fee to lease boat slips has been lowered to $125 per foot based on the length of the craft or the slip, whichever is greater.

Last season, the marina was underutilized and commissioners are hoping that the lower price will attract more boat owners to lease the slips.

The previous price was $145 per foot.

The hours of operation at the marina will be expanded but boaters will be required to restrict idling early in the morning and late at night as a courtesy to neighbors.

The commissioners agreed during their caucus session to move ahead with the construction of pilings which would help slip holders keep their boats in place.

Avon has funds remaining from a state grant for the marina and Borough Administrator Tim Gallagher said he will find out if the pilings can be paid for with grant money.

The commissioners approved a one-year shared services agreement with Bradley Beach for the use of Avon’s garbage trucks. The Bradley Beach Borough Council has not yet approved the agreement. The next meeting of the council will take place on Feb. 14.

The arrangement began Jan. 2 after Bradley Beach did not renew its contract with DeLisa Waste Services of Tinton Falls. Gallagher said the tentative agreement between the two borough has been working out well for both.

“The trucks are coming back, clean, empty and filled with fuel,” he said.

Also at their meeting earlier this week, the commissioners approved an application to the state Department of Transportation for a street improvement grant. The borough wants to work on portions of South Station Avenue and sections of Washington Avenue, Woodland Avenue and Norwood Avenue west of Main Street.

Five appointments were made to the borough Planning Board. Vincent Ernst, Calvin Talmadge and Marie Kenny were appointed to four-year terms. Francis McGovern and Joseph Oldakowski were named to two-year terms as alternate members.
