President Barack Obama’s decision to address the nation’s school children this week set off a furor among conservative parents thorough the country who accused the president of attempting to indoctrinate their children with socialist ideals. Some local school districts felt the backlash more than others.

In Ocean Township, Superintendent Thomas Pagano said his office had received 50 or 60 phone calls from parents who objected to the speech and said they would keep their children home if the school chose to air it.

“I would call it a firestorm of protest. I have never seen anything like it,” Pagano said.

Dr. Denise Lowe, now in her second week as Asbury Park’s superintendent of schools, is well aware of the challenges facing the district, but she is also confident in her ability to conquer them with the help of a dedicated staff and community.

“It’s not going to be easy,” Lowe said of her mission to get Asbury Park schools off of the list of districts in need of improvement, “but we are dedicated to that goal.”

Lowe, who was born and raised in Philadelphia but spent most of her professional career in New York, has some experience in turning struggling schools around. She most recently spent five years in Central Islip on Long Island as the district’s Director of Curriculum and Development. When she took the position the district had four schools on “the list.”

Arguments seeking to prevent a large school tax increase for Loch Arbour residents were heard in Superior Court Tuesday and a decision on the matter is expected by July 1.

Superior Court Judge Thomas W. Cavanagh Jr. heard procedural arguments from both sides in an attempt by Loch Arbour to have an injunction issued to halt the tax increase, which is scheduled to go into effect July 1.

“We are seeking a preliminary injunction to keep the (school tax) status quo until a summary hearing, with testimony, can be held later,” said Michael Schottland, the Freehold-based attorney representing Loch Arbour.
