“It was a great success. There were people from Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and people also drove in from other areas,” said Tim Brazier, who assisted on the project.

The event takes place at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel beginning at 6 p.m.

Sponsored by the arts organization Black 2 Work, Moore will also present a college scholarship in support of the arts to an Asbury Park student. Each year the mayor’s ball raises thousands of dollars in proceeds to help support college scholarships and recreation programs for Asbury Park youth.

Firefighters and family members packed the council chambers for the ceremony, which was originally planned for Fireman’s Park but was moved indoors due to inclement weather.

There was mixed reaction from business owners and beach supervisors about the summer that almost wasn’t. Still, August was sunny and mostly hot and bathers flocked to the beaches, pools and boardwalks.

In Asbury Park, Public Works Supervisor Gary Giberson described it as a good season.

On the anniversary of the 1934 maritime disaster Tuesday, the Asbury Park Historical Society hosted a dedication ceremony in honor of the 137 lives lost on that now famously ill-fated voyage that ended up a smoldering heap beached just off the city’s coast.

“It’s a chance to get outside of your comfort zone and it will probably be an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Mark McDonald, a local realtor. “And we will all be posing nude- for the entire time. Yes, you heard it right! Butt naked.”

“The event is intended to get people to celebrate living along Deal Lake and have other people really enjoy it as well,” said Mark Fleming, special events planner for the Friends of Deal Lake.

Residents, particularly in the Wanamassa, Interlaken and Asbury Park areas, are urged to host backyard parties and place lights along the lake with a suggested $20 donation to attend.

Although dedicated to keeping custody of his children, he now finds himself facing legal stumbling blocks and a poor economy.

Davis, 43, of Asbury Park regained custody of his three children ages 15, 13 and six in June and had just landed a permanent position with a garbage disposal company when an old warrant he could not pay caused him to lose his job.

“It’s not going to be easy,” Lowe said of her mission to get Asbury Park schools off of the list of districts in need of improvement, “but we are dedicated to that goal.”

Lowe, who was born and raised in Philadelphia but spent most of her professional career in New York, has some experience in turning struggling schools around. She most recently spent five years in Central Islip on Long Island as the district’s Director of Curriculum and Development. When she took the position the district had four schools on “the list.”
