Although dedicated to keeping custody of his children, he now finds himself facing legal stumbling blocks and a poor economy.

Davis, 43, of Asbury Park regained custody of his three children ages 15, 13 and six in June and had just landed a permanent position with a garbage disposal company when an old warrant he could not pay caused him to lose his job.

Dr. Denise Lowe, now in her second week as Asbury Park’s superintendent of schools, is well aware of the challenges facing the district, but she is also confident in her ability to conquer them with the help of a dedicated staff and community.

“It’s not going to be easy,” Lowe said of her mission to get Asbury Park schools off of the list of districts in need of improvement, “but we are dedicated to that goal.”

Lowe, who was born and raised in Philadelphia but spent most of her professional career in New York, has some experience in turning struggling schools around. She most recently spent five years in Central Islip on Long Island as the district’s Director of Curriculum and Development.
