Neptune Says Yes to Fireworks

The annual Neptune Day fireworks will be held at Ocean Grove beachfront after all but on Sept. 18, a week after the official Neptune Day celebration

“It was felt that the fireworks would conflict with some 9-11 memorials and some of the volunteer fire and first aid departments felt that they would be inappropriate on that day,” said Ocean Grove resident Eileen Kean, who has been collecting money to help fund the fireworks.

Another Season Closing on Ocean Grove Tents

As the light faded on a late summer afternoon recently, the tenters of Ocean Grove, that group who every summer choose to vacate the comforts of home in favor of 100-year-old canvas tents pitched in the shadow of the Great Auditorium, were doing what they always do; sitting on their porches reading, crocheting, gabbing with neighbors or simply watching passersby.

“If you don’t like socializing you shouldn’t live in a tent,” said Audrey Bussani, who gladly put down her needle work to talk to this reporter about her summer quarters. No, they don’t get wet in the rain. And yes, they have toilets and showers. They have other perks too.

Neptune Fireworks Display Is Topic of Special Meeting

Fireworks plans for Neptune Day’s annual pyrotechnic display at the Ocean Grove beachfront are looking a little bit brighter.

At least $5,000 has been raised by Ocean Grove resident Eileen Kean to help fund the display.

“I think fireworks unite the community and are just a wonderful source of entertainment for children and families,” she said.

Court Rules Sampler Inn is Safety Hazard, Should Be Demolished

A Superior Court judge ruled last week that it is in the best interest of the public that the landmark Sampler Inn in Ocean Grove be demolished.

Last Friday Superior Court Judge Patricia DelBueno Cleary lifted a temporary injunction she issued earlier that prevented the hotel, at 28 Main Ave., from being razed.

“The judge felt that our concerns about safety far outweighed the concerns of the plaintiff,” said Neptune Township Attorney Gene Anthony.

Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach Jr. Lifeguards Compete in Tourney

Ocean Grove and Bradley Beach junior lifeguards competed against local teams, as well as teams from as far as Cape May and New York in Monday’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Junior Lifeguard Tournament. The event was hosted by Sea Girt at National Guard Training Center beach, a military beach within the Borough of Sea Girt. The beach, which has a more natural setting and was less crowded than other area beaches, proved to be the perfect spot for junior guards to showcase their skills.

Junior Lifeguards Compete in Ocean Grove Tournament

Just a day after the Mid-Atlantic Regional Jr. Lifeguard Tournament was held in Sea Girt, area guards returned to compete in a smaller tournament held in Ocean Grove on Tuesday afternoon.

The tournament featured four events, a distance swim, boogie board race, run swim run, and beach flags. Junior guards aged 6-16 were encouraged to participate in as many events as they wished.

Medals were awarded to the top three places in each event, separated by age group and for both male and female.

The White Horses Of Ocean Grove

Are horse drawn carriage rides harmless, enjoyable entertainment or an outdated inappropriate use of the horses?

In Ocean Grove the issue has been raised by some residents who think the milk white horse pulling a carriage for residents and visitors several days a week is overworked. Maybe, if it was the same horse.

Court Stops Sampler Inn Demolition; Schedules Hearing

An injunction preventing the demolition of Ocean Grove’s well-known Sampler Inn was issued by a Superior Court judge July 2 at the same time Neptune officials were accepting bids to take the old hotel down.

Superior Court Judge Patricia DelBueno Cleary granted E.K. Sampler LLC and Elliot Koplitz., owners of the hotel at 28 Main Avenue, a temporary injunction with a hearing on the matter to be held Aug. 21.

“We cannot award any demolition contract until after the hearing,” said Township Clerk Richard J. Cuttrell.

Ocean Grove Video Producer Wins Award for Historical Society

The Historical Society of Ocean Grove was a big winner recently at the New Jersey League of Historical Societies convention, winning three awards.

The group won first place in the DVD competition, for it’s DVD about Ocean Grove’s Victorian Architecture.

Bob Green, the DVD’s producer, accepted the award on behalf of the society.

In Ocean Grove, More Than Just a Home

When someone purchases a house in Ocean Grove, they are not only getting a home but an address in a National Historic District.

Neptune Township Land Use Administrator Bernard Haney, who was a guest speaker at the Ocean Grove Homeowners Association meeting Saturday, said he is putting together a package for new homeowners which would educate them about the historic district.

Township Committee member Kevin McMillan, who is the liaison to the tax assessor office, told the homeowners “We are committed to maintaining the integrity of Ocean Grove.”
