$6.8 Million Library Plan Reviewed

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

By PAUL BOOTH
The Tinton Falls Borough Council got its first glimpse Tuesday night of what a newly constructed $6.8 million library could look like on the site of the former borough hall.
The proposed library, at 25,800 square feet, is eight times larger than the borough’s current 3,000 square foot structure and would cost $6.8 million in brick and mortar construction, explained project architect Dennis Kowal. If the project were approved and bonded, it could be completed by 2011.
Kowal, of Dennis Kowal Architects in Somerville, told the council that the average library for a community of Tinton Falls’ size would fall in the range of 24,000 to 27,000 square feet and repeatedly described the borough’s current library as woefully inadequate.

The Tinton Falls Borough Council had a shock on Tuesday when its newly elected president abruptly resigned.
Brendan Tobin, a two-term councilman, was elected council president last month, began the council meeting by announcing he was “resigning effective immediately.” He handed a terse letter to that effect to Law Director James Berube and walked out, leaving a shocked and surprised dais of officials behind.
He declined to give reasons when asked by a reporter, and no one on council offered one or would even speculate on it.

Family Homeless After Tinton Falls Fire

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

By GARRETT STASSE
A fast-moving fire blown by strong breezes destroyed a Tinton Falls house Tuesday, leaving a family of four homeless.
According to fire officials, the house, at 22 Churchill Downs Dr., caught fire when the heat exchanger in the air conditioning system malfunctioned. One of the owners, who was not identified, tried to douse the blaze with an extinguisher but it ran out of suppressant.
The flames had ignited a fence. The wind reignited the flames which spread to the house. The owner, the mother of two teenagers, called 911. She was the only one home and escaped without injury, the source said.

Two of Tinton Falls unsung heroes got a leg up, thanks to school children and others who donated to purchase bullet-proof vests for the boroughs K-9 unit.
The Vested Interest Fund run by the Associated Humane Societies donated two bullet-proof vests to the Police Departments K-9 Unit to give them as much protection as their human handlers. The vests are valued at $895 each. There are three dogs in the canine unit and one already has a vest.
Theyve earned it, Chief Gerald Turning said.
