In Ocean Grove: Centennial Cottage to Host Yard Sale

coaster-news-200-newA Cottage Yard Sale is scheduled by the Historical Society of Ocean Grove for Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Central Avenue and McClintock Street.
The event is one of the end of summer events to a successful summer for the society. More than 4000 individuals have visited so far this season to enjoy the new exhibition at the museum, participate in the Annual House Tour, Walking Tours, the Women’s History Tour, varied workshops, Ocean Grove History Days, the annual Postcard and Antique show, and more.
The new museum exhibition has been especially popular, society officials said. Funded with a grant obtained from the Kearny Bank Foundation, the exhibit titled “Ladies, Land, Liquor and the Lord: Women of Ocean Grove in the Stokes Era, 1869-1897” will be on display through December 2016.
The Aug. 20 annual Postcard, Antiques and Collectibles Show raised nearly $3,000 for the Society. The Cottage Yard Sale is being held in conjunction with the Giant Flea Market on Ocean Pathway. Historical and unique items from the Historical Society “vault” will be on sale that day on the grounds of Centennial Cottage.
Have items you wish to donate for the Yard Sale? Collectibles and interesting antique items will be accepted. Contact Linda Dousis, sale coordinator, at ldousis@gmail.com.
A recent New York Times article called Ocean Grove a “museum of Victorian architecture.” Over 600 people toured Ocean Grove homes of distinction on Friday July 15, 2016 for the 48th Annual House Tour. Despite the heat, this successful fundraiser for the Society raised over 15 percent more than in the past year and, as it does annually, promoted the unique architectural beauty of the seaside town.
Since its founding in 1969, the Historical Society of Ocean Grove has pledged itself to preserve, document, and encourage community interest in the history of Ocean Grove. The purpose of this nonprofit Society is to sustain the heritage and honor of being designated a National Historic District. Ocean Grove was entered as a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places District (1976) and the New Jersey State Register of Historic Places District (1975).
