Dr. Tom Means, founder of the Means Language Center in New York City since 1999, is opening an Asbury Park location at 601 Bangs Ave., Suite 509.
Means is a pioneer in the field of Second Language Acquisition and has developed the Means Method® for teaching languages. This approach to teaching and learning languages is a form of task-based instruction, and it was defined by Means in his Ph.D. dissertation.
The method is predicated on the value of experiential learning: After successfully using a language for several hours, students’ proficiency and confidence build up accordingly. At the Means Language Center students learn languages through extended exposure to them and by using them in a meaningful way.
The Means Method® is a structured and clear roadmap that leads people to a working knowledge of European and Asian Languages. It is developed for learning: Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, English, German, Chinese, and Japanese.
Tom Means, a native of Ocean Township, is assistant professor in the Department of Modern Languages at Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York. He is the author or co-author of eight books, including the Instant Vocabulary Builder series published by Hippocrene Books.
Means founded the Means Language Center in 1999 and since then, he and his team of 25+ language trainers have taught languages to hundreds of individuals and dozens of international companies. The Center’s client list includes Maserati, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Mercedes Benz and Kenneth Cole, to name just a few.
Means has taught at several universities (NYU, Rutgers, Montclair State) and he also served as a head interpreter at the State of the World Forum 2000 where he personally interpreted for over a dozen world leaders including Mikhail Gorbachev and George Soros.
