The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association said work was scheduled to start today (Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020) on nearly a half of million dollar replacement of the wooden boards on the south end of the boardwalk.
The project includes replacement of more than 600 linear feet of the old boardwalk. It is scheduled to be completed by mid-May.
“We are delighted to start the process of replacing the old boardwalk on the South End with new materials that will match the rest of the boardwalk,” Jamie Jackson, Executive Director / COO said. “It is a much-needed upgrade and we look forward to this spring when the entire boardwalk is finished with new Trex decking.
The Ocean Grove boardwalk, which is owned and maintained by the OGCMA, had its first introduction to Trex composite decking after it was destroyed by the Super Storm Sandy. In 2018, the North End section of the boardwalk was replaced with the composite material. The last remaining old boardwalk being replaced this year starts just south of the Embury Avenue entrance and ends just before the pier intersects with the boardwalk. The pier also is to be rebuilt as funds are raised through the on-the-boards.org campaign.
Beginning Feb. 11 there will be no parking between Broadway and Embury streets along the east side of Ocean Avenue due to the demolition work. The benches and the flower urns located on the boardwalk will be the first items to be removed. They will be stored during the renovation and put back in place when the boardwalk is completed.
Fencing is currently up in anticipation of the start of the demolition process. When the removal of the current boardwalk is set to begin, a new pedestrian path will be created on the west side of the boardwalk.
