  By DON STINE Concerned residents, environmentalists and sportsmen said they will continue to pressure the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over a controversial beach replenishment project that may clog the Deal Lake flume in Asbury Park and prevent fishing from spawning.   By DON STINE Deal Lake will experience increased flooding and fish will be prevented from spawning under a plan being pursued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, local officials and environmentalists said this week. “The flume from the lake will be plugged up with sand and the only way to get water out of the lake will be by pumping it out- which is crazy,” said Joseph Pallotto president of the Asbury Park Fishing Club, the oldest such club in America. Funds Needed to Restore Deal Lake as an ‘Absolute Gem’

  Deal Lake, the largest lake in Monmouth County, is a great asset to the county and with a bit of money could be an “absolute gem,” said Jerry Maurer, president of the Friends of Deal Lake. $7,500 Grant Being Used to Stabilize Banks of Deal Lake

ASBURY PARK – A project at the Asbury Park boat ramp, near the Main Street Bridge over Deal Lake into Loch Arbour and Allenhurst, is underway to prevent soil erosion into the lake. Project Engineer Peter Avakian said the banks are being reinforced with a special matting made from coconut husks, which will then be planted with vegetation designed to stabilize the banks. Catch a Carp, Win Some Cash

  ASBURY PARK – Deal Lake’s first-ever carp fishing contest will kick off on Sun., April 21, 2013 but get up early if you plan to be a contender. The contest, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 a.m. and will continue until noon. Prizes range from $75 for the largest carp and $25 for the next highest, to $25 for the most carp caught during the contest. All fish must be counted or weighed before noon.
