Bradley Beach will receive a $250,000 NJDOT grant to continue the construction and improvements to LeReine Avenue.

At the Borough Council meeting this week officials said the borough can apply for more grant money if needed to complete the project from Central Avenue to Ocean Avenue. The borough will also receive another $30,500 from FEMA to go towards the tag booth on the boardwalk as well as the gazebo and the solar panels on the roof.

Pete Johner, the Area Manager of External Affairs of the Central Region from Jersey Central Power and Light, presented an update and all the work they’ve been doing in the wake of both Hurricanes Irene and Sandy in the area. Johner urged residents to check out JCPL’s new website – www.firstenergycorp.com – to see the enhancements they have made to both the website and the “significant changes made in the company.”

Residents can also use the website to report on street light outages and utilize the “My Town” tool to keep track of power outages in their area and find out the estimated time of power return.

Council members also praised the recent addition of the mini free libraries on the boardwalk. It was noted how the libraries have made the beachfront friendlier to both locals and visitors.

Mayor Gary Engelstad thanked the public works employees and the police force for helping the town “get through Lobsterfest incident free.”

Beach replenishment is planned this year but the question remains as to when it will take place. Engelstad said he hopes it can wait until well after Labor Day to begin the work.

It was also announced that on Sat., July 27 free skin cancer scans will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Fifth Avenue Beach.
