A Neptune man died when struck by an NJ Transit train Tues., Dec. 3 in Asbury Park.

The dead man is Abdul Clackley, 51, of Neptune, said Asbury Park Police Capt. Marshawn Love. The train struck the man in the area of the 6th Avenue train crossing and the Deal Lake railroad bridge, according to city police and NJ Transit.

Police received a report of the incident at 4:11 p.m., apparently from the train crew, Love said. An initial investigation shows the man appeared to come from behind the bridge’s structure onto the tracks, Love said.

The train that struck the man was heading south, with its next stop the Asbury Park station a few blocks away, said Garrett Giberson, a city Fire Department spokesman. The North Jersey Coast Line passenger train was headed to its southern terminus in Bay Head, said Nancy Snyder, an NJ Transit spokeswoman.

Asbury Park Police and NJ Transit Police each said they were continuing the investigation as of Wednesday morning.

Because of the incident, service on the commuter train line was halted initially, but was restored within minutes, Snyder said. Delays of up to 45 minutes were reported in both directions between Bay Head and Long Branch before a normal schedule was resumed at 6:40 p.m., Snyder said.
