Asbury Park Police Captain Anthony Salerno will be appointed as the city’s new Deputy Police Chief on May 1. The city has been without a deputy chief since current Police Chief Mark Kinmon, who previously held the position, was promoted in 2007.
Police Sergeant John Crescio, who joined the department in 1998, is also being promoted to Lieutenant. Salerno has been with the police department for about 26 years.
“I think this is a good thing for the police department and the city. Tony brings a lot to the table- he is very knowledgeable and driven and he will go a long way towards accomplishing our goals in the department,” Kinmon said.
Both officers will be sworn in during a ceremony at City Hall on Thursday, May 1 at 1 p.m.
“This is an exciting time for the police department. We have been going through a transition for the last year or so and we are starting to make a lot of changes and reorganizing- so there is a lot going on here,” Kinmon said.
City Manager Jack Kelly said Salerno’s promotion will help streamline the chain of command in the police department.
“When the chief is out of town, it is good to have somebody who is available within the department who is directly responsible for maintaining balance in the department and give clear directions. I am excited we are able to promote two fine public servants,” he said.
