coaster-news-200Neptune City Police will be taking part in the national “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt campaign until June 1.

The idea of the annual campaign is to promote the life-saving value of seatbelt use.

“Using a seatbelt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling,” said Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “In 2010 alone, seatbelts saved an estimated 12,546 lives nationwide.”

Proedubicky said the state goal is to increase front-seat belt use from 91 percent to 92 percent.

“To meet our goal, we must continue both enforcement and public outreach efforts that educate all motor vehicle occupants about the importance of buckling up every ride,” Proedubicky said.

The campaign also will address backseat buckling up, Proedubicky said. Laws require adults in backseats to buckle up, but use stands at only 44 percent.
