Coaster Photo – A contruction crew is scheduled to being driving pilings into the sand today (May 29) for a new boardwalk in Ocean Grove to replace the section destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

Ocean Grove’s $1.1 million dollar boardwalk reconstruction project is scheduled to begin today (May 29) when Epic Management’s construction crew will begin driving pilings into the sand along a half-mile stretch of beachfront on Ocean Avenue that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

“The new boardwalk is being rebuilt 30 feet west of its former location in line with the existing northerly and southerly sections and behind the existing bulkhead that provided excellent protection during the storm,” said Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association’s Chief Operating Officer, J.P. Gradone.

The $1,135,570 construction project has been funded by a Neptune Township Bond issue which was approved on January 27. OGCMA will repay the township as it receives its FEMA funding, which will be at approximately 90 percent – the same as neighboring communities.

“We are scheduled to complete the boardwalk by the end of June, and are planning a boardwalk ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday, July 6 at 2 p.m,” Gradone said. “We are delighted that this phase of our Sandy recovery efforts will be completed in time for our 145th summer season, as we welcome visitors back to our beautiful shore.”
