Two Republican political newcomers beat out a former Interlaken mayor in this week’s GOP primary.

Mindy Horowitz and John Gunn beat former Mayor Robert Wolf III to get their party’s nod to run for two, three-year terms on the Borough Council in this November’s general election.

Horowitz was the high vote-getter with 169, followed by Gunn with 160 votes. Wolf received 88.

Democratic incumbent Robert Napoli, who ran unopposed in his party’s primary, received 27 votes.

One of the seats up for grabs in November is Napoli’s and the other is that of Jonathan Cohen, who decided not to seek reelection after filling the one-year unexpired term of former Councilman Corey Folta, who moved from the borough.

Horowitz and Gunn could not be reached for comment yesterday. Both ran unsuccessfully for seats on the Board of Education in the last election.

During her campaign, Horowitz said she feels there needs to be a woman on the current council and that, with her degree in accounting, she thinks she can be an asset.

She also said she would like to see more transparency on the council and feels there is a “combative attitude” on the governing body right now.

Gunn said during his campaign that he believes he can bring in some experience to help manage Interlaken’s affairs after being a former director of project management for AT&T.

Gunn said he has “no magic formula” right now with any problems confronting Interlaken but that he will confront issues as they head his way.
