The 22nd Neptune City Day is scheduled for Sat., Aug. 2 in Memorial Park and this year features a pizza eating contest as well as an ice cream eating contest.

Most borough streets will be closed from 7:30 to 9 a.m. for the annual 5K race at 8:00am. The 5k registration will take place from 6:30 to 8 a.m. and will benefit the Neptune City First Aid Squad.

Attendees can enjoy live entertainment including Glycerine Queens at 4 p.m. and Rick Pryor and Friends at 7:30 p.m. Rides and food and craft vendors will open at 3 p.m. Ride bracelets will be available at the Community Center for $15 prior to August 1st and will also be available at the event for $20. With the bracelet you can ride all day from 3 to 9 p.m.

This year, the Committee is bringing back some of the event’s favorite attractions including a large inflatable Super Slide and Rock Wall. Demonstrations include a Budo Way Karate Demo at 4:15 p.m. and a Canine Demonstration at 5:15 p.m.

Food vendors include the Neptune City Committee who will be serving hamburgers, hot dogs, and roasted clams; Loui Linguini’s butterfly fries; Debbie O’s funnel cakes; Pizza Etc., and Weaser’s Ice.

The event will also feature the annual Pete and Elda’s pizza eating contest at 5:45pm. Anyone over the age of 18 may sign up. The Cone Zone will be sponsoring the event’s first ice cream eating contest at 6:00 pm.

Those interested in playing bocce can sign up for the Annual Summer Doubles Tournament, limited to 32 teams. To sign up, contact Sal Caliendo at 732-988-4540.

Neptune City Day will culminate with a fireworks display over the Shark River at 9 p.m.

“I want to thank everyone for their efforts,” said Mayor Robert Brown at the Borough Council’s July 28th meeting. “Every year the event comes together.”

Councilwoman Barbara Schafer noted the event’s need for volunteers who urged those interested in volunteering to contact Borough Hall for more information.

“We’re in need of volunteers and any help would be beneficial,” Schafer said.
