Asbury Park’s new City Council hopes to fill vacancies in some of the top managerial positions in the city in the near future.

Asbury Park, one of only two cities in Monmouth County, is now without a permanent city clerk, city manager, chief financial officer, and police chief. All people in these key positions are “acting” appointments right now, pending the appointment of full-time personnel.

Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said that the City Council hopes to resolve these job issues in the near future.

“We are a city going through a transition right now with a new form of government and an entirely new council. We are looking forward to filling these positions but we also want to find the best people for the job,” she said.

A new city clerk is necessary since the retirement of long-time Clerk Stephen Katy at the end of January. Current acting-City Clerk Melody Hartsgrove decided to stay in her positioni as deputy clerk and registrar once a new city clerk is appointed.

“People have until Feb. 20 to submit their resume and we then hope to make an appointment as soon as possible,” Quinn said.

She said that the city is seeking a headhunting firm to help find qualified candidates for the city manager job after Jack Kelly recently left the position to become the city manager for Newark.

“We hope the firm can do outreach and find people that are a good fit for Asbury Park,” Quinn said.

According to information posted on the city’s website, candidates for the city clerk job should be “an organized and professional individual with strong communication, computer, interpersonal, management skills and the ability to effectively interact with the public for the full-time (35 hours per week) position of City Clerk.”

Candidates should have experience as a municipal clerk or Assistant/Deputy Clerk and should have or be willing to obtain a Registered
Municipal Clerk’s certification.

Candidates must be able to attend evening meetings.

Interested parties can send their resume, salary requirements and references no later than Feb. 20 to: Mary Kay Callahan, Payroll Supervisor, City of Asbury Park, One Municipal Plaza, Asbury Park, New Jersey 07712.
