Tenth Avenue in Neptune will be improved in the near future if the township receives a $200,000 state Community Development Block Grant.
At a recent meeting the Township Committee approved submitting the grant application.
If approved, Tenth Avenue, between Route 35 and Memorial Drive, would see new sidewalks, curb repairs and handicapped-access ramps installed, Township Engineer Leanne Hoffman said during a special presentation to the governing body.
Hoffman said this project was the “overwhelming choice” from several projects under review by a special citizen’s participation committee that looks a projects to be funded through a CDBG.
Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Avenues have seen similar repairs and improvements previously and Tenth will be next.
“Ninth Avenue is not as bad as Tenth,” Hoffman said.
The maximum amount that can be received under the CDBG is $200,000, which is what the township is applying for.
Hoffman said road improvements will also be needed with the project but that cost is not covered under the CDBG funding.
“The road is not properly graded,” she said.
She said another $275,000 will be needed to do the entire project and that that money will come from a $998,000 capital fund earmarked for road improvements.
Hoffman said temporary speed bumps have been installed on Tenth Avenue as a traffic-calming measure.
