Don Lewis, president of the Bradley Beach Historical Society and Museum, along with various residents, were featured on NJTV and Channel 13 on Tues., Feb. 9 after Bradley Beach Tourism Director and owner of Paws & Anchor, Nicole Kienlen, entered the Ask Away contest.

Kienlen asked, “Who was Captain William Kidd and where is his treasure buried in Bradley Beach?”

According to NJTV’s research, Kidd buried his treasure along the Jersey coast and it’s suspected to be worth millions. NJTV interviewed Department of Public Works Operation Supervisor, Richard Bianchi, Jr. who found a centerpiece from an old ship. Bianchi said 20-years ago, the borough would see 10-15 guys looking for coins, but not as recently.

Lewis said his piece was cut short to 10-seconds because of “Governor Christie’s run for president,”

“It was a really nice piece about Bradley Beach,” Lewis said.

Mayor Gary Engelstad, building on Bradley Beach’s history, expressed his condolences for Richard Johnson, who died Feb. 5. Johnson lived in Bradley Beach for over 65 years, retiring in 1987 as Superintendent of Bradley Beach Public Works and according to Engelstad shares a rich history of the borough.

“His kids were going through his house and found a James Bradley for Senate poster,” Engelstad said. “That is a family that cares deeply about the history of this town.”
