The Asbury Park City Council appointed Eileen Chapman to the council seat vacated by Joe Woerner who left due to illness in his family.
Chapman was one of 12 city residents who applied for the seat.
The term expires at the end of the year and will be up for grabs in November.
Chapman is a longtime city resident and volunteer. She is a trustee of the Asbury Park Historical Society and a frequent volunteer with the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce.
She is assistant director of the Center for the Arts at Monmouth University in West Long Branch where she is also the director of the Bruce Springsteen special collection. She was the former general manager of the Stone Pony.
Woerner resigned his seat April 28. He was elected in November 2014 on the Asbury Together ticket along with Mayor John Moor and the other three council members.
His young son, Michael, was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis 1 in December 2014. The disease is a genetic mutation that causes tumors to grow on nerves. It manifests itself in a wide variety of symptoms; from a few small tumors on the skin to ones that grow on vital organs that cause death.
“Due to Michael’s health issues, and my need to focus on my family, I am stepping down as Asbury Park City Councilman,” Woerner said.
