The Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce will be awarding a scholarship for the first time this year.
Executive Director Sylvia Sylvia-Cioffi said the scholarship will be named the Roy Wertz Memorial Scholarship after the former president of the chamber who died in September.
“This way it will keep Roy’s memory alive,” Sylvia-Cioffi said.
Being a Board of Education member in Ocean Township gave her the idea, she said.
“I thought why don’t we do that here, I thought it would be a pretty cool thing,” she said.
Funds for the scholarship will come partially from the proceeds of the Asbury Park Restaurant Tour which was held Sun., April 30.
Sylvia-Cioffi said the event was sold out with many people attempting to buy tickets as late as 3 p.m. for the tour which ended at 4 p.m.
“When people saw the weather….I had to turn people away. They showed up at 3 p.m., with only one hour left, but at $35 a ticket, I guess they thought it was worth it,” she said.
There were 1500 tickets available, with most sold before the event.
