Coaster Photo – Neptune author Kay Harris signs copies for her book “From Amistad to the White House: Teachable Moments From 1839 to Within My Lifetime” at the Second Baptist Church in Asbury Park June 17.

On June 22 Neptune author Kay Harris will hold a book reading and discussion of “From Amistad to the White House: Teachable Moments From 1839 to Within My Lifetime”- a personal journey through the American Civil Rights Movement.

The event takes place at the Asbury Park Public Library from 7 to 9 pm. The public is invited.

“It is a fascinating, first-hand look, from Kay’s own perspective, at the tragedies and triumphs of the American Civil Rights Movement and I think it is a must-read book, not only for adults but also for high school and college students. Too many young people today do not know about the struggles endured by so many in this historic movement,” Asbury Park Historical Society President Don Stine said.

Admission is free. Books will also be for sale and refreshments will be served.

Harris, who will read excerpts and lead a discussion, took an excursion through many of the pivotal places in history of the Civil Rights struggle. It was a journey that took her from the cityscapes of Birmingham, Alabama and Memphis, Tennessee to the nearly forgotten backroads of Money, Mississippi.

Retelling the often-devastating events that transpired at these places, Harris lends her perspective as an African- American woman who came of age during that era. In the book, she also brings the reader up to date with reflections on the election of America’s first Black President and recent news stories that continue to frame the ongoing struggle for human rights
