It’s official, former Ocean Township Councilman John Huss is having a street named in his honor.

“It’s a great honor, no doubt about it,” Huss said.

The new street goes from West Park Avenue into a new development of age-restricted residential housing, called 777 West Park Avenue. The new housing, near the post office, was built to replace similar housing along the Poplar Brook that was subject to flooding and subsequently razed.

“The street is functioning but people, like Uber drivers, are not finding it- so we are naming it. And Huss has been a longtime supporter of the township in many ways,” Mayor Christopher Siciliano said.

He said there are plans to honor about ten more community activists in the same way later this year. The street signs for Huss have been ordered and a ceremony will take place once they arrive.

“This is also a good way to honor people who have served our community and there are a lot of other people in township who deserve even more,” Siciliano said.

Huss said he was always taught that when you are honored, it is something you have to have earned.

“I am not just sitting back. I have to keep on going and doing things for the township,” he said.

Huss, 83, moved from Neptune into Ocean Township in 1962 and served on the Township Council from 1975 to 1979, the Planning Board from 1972 until 1975 and then again from 1977 to 1979, and the Sewerage Authority from 1980 to 1985, where he also served as the chairman.

He said former state Sen. Joe Palaia was his mentor and got him involved in politics and community service. Huss has also launched his own privately-funded campaign that pays for magnetic decals that can be placed cars to honor the local police department.
